Little-used Benn Ferriero scored 7:03 into overtime in his playoff debut, getting a goal on a deflection and giving the San Jose Sharks a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night in Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinal series at San Jose.
Ferriero's shot hit off Detroit defenseman Brad Stuart's stick and got past Jimmy Howard for the game-winner seconds after the Red Wings killed a four-minute penalty.
Joe Pavelski scored the tying goal on a power play in the third period for San Jose. Antti Niemi made 24 saves as the Sharks, who won three first-round games against the Kings in overtime, did it again.
Howard made 44 saves, and Nicklas Lidstrom scored the only Detroit goal the day after his 41st birthday.
Tampa Bay 4, at Washington 2: Sean Bergenheim scored early, Steve Downie had a goal and an assist, and Steven Stamkos netted the go-ahead goal on a power play, helping the Lightning defeat the top-seeded Capitals in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Alexander Semin and Eric Fehr scored for Washington, which led 2-1 in the second period before Downie and Stamkos put Tampa Bay ahead with goals less than 31/2 minutes apart. Dominic Moore added an empty-netter with 40 seconds left for the fifth-seeded Lightning, which has won four games in a row since falling behind Pittsburgh 3-1 in the first round.
